The Scholar is the story of Louisa and Theo. Two wounded souls, searching for love and happiness. Theo first met Louisa when she was young. Her mother died when she was three and her alcoholic and abusive father raised her. He was a twin, the "quiet twin", who enlisted in the Army for World War I and came home after experiencing the horrors of war. He went to university to become a doctor; she stayed in Emerson Pass with her adoptive parents Pastor Lind and his wife.Early in the story, Louisa suffers a heartbreaking loss. Theo is there to console her. Theo has always been in love with Louisa. She thought she was in love with his twin Flynn and only realized it was a passing young girl's crush when she was older.Their story has some twists and turns; some I was able to predict, others not. The story is set during Prohibition shortly after the end of WWI. The descriptions of the characters and their apparel was delightful.Reading about the Barnes family in the 1920's was enlightening. When I think historical, I don't think the 1920's, but I love that Tess Thompson is bringing this family forward from the early 1900's to present day. The description of the times with many of the issues that prevail at the time, give the reader a look back at history. I especially love the fact that it addresses issues women faced for that time.This is Theo Barnes story along with that of Louisa Lind. Both characters have faced hardships, that are certainly relevant and believable for the early 1920's and even today. It was a joy to read about Theo allowing as well as embracing the idea that women are capable of being more than wives and mothers. In Louisa, you find a character who is strong and resilient, despite her feeling she is anything but these characteristics.This is another great book in a wonderful series.
