I do so enjoy how Flum ruthlessly cuts down the unforgivable foes that keep threatening her and Milkit's precious daily life in the capital, and am looking forward to the next volume where the Hero party (what's left of it) and Flum's group finally converge for an epic climax. Two SPOILER critiques below, people who haven't finished this volume, beware.However, as a longtime fan of kiki sensei, but as someone who believes that all authors who bring up gender issues in their stories should handle said issues with great care and understanding, I am honestly feeling very cautious about the sudden reveal that Nekt was in fact a girl. The story has Nekt go through a ongoing struggle over the fact he?/she? had her identity as a girl brainwashed away from her from her evil 'mother', and since volume 4 hasn't released yet at this time, I'm not sure if yet another storyline about gender identity is about to be mishandled or not treated with enough care. If Nekt decides to reclaim her identity as a born woman, I think that would be a pretty good development and would certainly fit in with the theme of rebellion that "Roll Over and Die!" series been driven by. On the other hand, IF Nekt identifies as a guy, I don't know if we can expect the author to go as far as to depict gender dysphoria or depict Nekt's journey as well as other stories about women. Overall, this volume left many things off on another cliffhanger, so readers will have to wait till Volume 4 before maybe getting any answers. There's also the unresolved issue of Nekt's evil caretaker 'mother' who may or may not be a derogatory stereotype of an 'okama' (Japanese slur/stereotype of a transperson/crossdresser), and I'm hoping the author doesn't end as a yet another case of poor representation of a transperson.Overall, I hope my fears for potentially poor handling of sensitive gender issues the worst stay fictions, because I really like this "Roll Over and Die" series, and would really be upset to see it fall to common stereotypes and overly simple resolutions. See you all in the next volume. I can't wait to start reading the next book. This has the perfect balance of horror and character moments. I recommend it.
